DEVELOPERS are planning to build 28 new homes on a brownfield site in a village.

Nexus Land Ltd wants to demolish the former Grangewood Centre care home in Kelvedon High Street and build apartments and homes behind it.

The developer has submitted three separate planning applications to Braintree Council, which include renovating Grade II listed numbers 4, 6 and 8 High Street, for residential use, and 16 High Street for commercial use.

A planning statement by agents Phase 2 Planning and Development said: “Parts of the site, including the former yard, are unattractive.

“As such it is not considered that the site contributes positively towards the character and appearance of the locality or the conservation area within which the site falls.

“The 1960’s building is also considered to detract from the prevailing character by reason of its form.

“Whilst no conservation area appraisal has been produced by the council it can be established that in its current form set behind the main street frontage, the site is uncharacteristic of the conservation area but that within the village there is now established backland development which has developed since the second world war which establishes a layering pattern of development within the village.”

The plans for the new builds include four houses with two bedrooms, four houses with three bedrooms and 17 homes with four bedrooms, plus a block of single bed apartments, with nine affordable homes in total.

Most of the homes would be built on the former Butler Fuels Depot site, which is backed onto by homes in Easterford Road, Brockwell Lane and Maldon Road.

Access would be from the High Street between the Grangewood site and 8 High Street.

There is already planning permission for four homes on the site, which Kelvedon Parish Council previously objected to.

Kelvedon Parish Council’s assistant clerk Sue Green said: “We had our planning meeting on Monday when the other two were discussed, which are not very controversial.

“At the time we hadn’t seen the application for the other 28.”
