We’ve taken several calls from readers this afternoon about a strong odour surrounding the town since about 2pm.

The smell has been likened to manure or slurry but seems to be extremely strong and can be smelt from right across the area.

One resident, who lives in Broad Road, said: "There has been a terrible smell outside my door for about half an hour.

"My husband thinks it is manure slurry but it is absolutely dreadful. 

"The council told me they've had several people call about it and they can smell it from Causeway House."

Braintree Council has been contacted for comment.
