Witham town councillors are fighting to safeguard the town’s “valuable” children’s centres, youth centre and youth bus in the face of huge cost-cutting plans.

At a meeting on Monday, councillors voiced their “disbelief” at Essex County Council’s consultation on stripping the town of vital resources in two of the most deprived areas Witham.

ECC wants to cut the opening hours of the Roundabout Centre, at Templars Primary School, from 50 hours to 10.

The Harlequin Centre, in Spa Road, which currently opens for 50 hours, would open for 40 hours and 10 hours for telephone service as EEC strives to make £2.5million in savings.

Councillor Lucy Barlow said: “The Roundabout Children’s Centre isn’t just in the poorest area in Witham, the estate is one of the poorest areas in mid Essex."
