Witham residents have raised a record-breaking amount of cash for this year’s Poppy Appeal.
RBL Witham Branch social secretary Annie Northfield said: “Thanks to the generosity of the people of Witham and the surrounding area, a massive £21,551 was raised by the sale of poppies for the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday.”
The appeal was launched in the Grove Shopping Centre on October 26 and a further £4,665 was raised from special events including the ever popular Essex concert band - Poppy Prom, a bridge afternoon, 1940s dance and several quizzes, bringing the overall total to £26,220 with still more cash to come in.
Witham branch chairman Andrew Black said: “The huge amount raised this year is thanks to the unstinting work of Jane Casement, our new branch Poppy Appeal organiser, the volunteers and most importantly everyone who supported the events and donated to the appeal.”
