We asked Witham's Ukip hopeful Garry Cockrill six questions, but only gave him 50 words to answer. These are the results:
1. What do think about the current Government-set house building targets in Witham? If you don’t agree with them, how will you fight them?
Projected immigration will add a city near the size of Birmingham to Britain every 30 months for the next seventy five years, according to the Office for National Statistics. UKIP would leave the EU, restoring UK borders and permit local residents the final say on development in a local referendum.
2. Apart from the NHS, what should be the government’s number one spending priority?
Welfare is the second largest area of government spending and UKIP would not propose further cuts. Instead we would scrap the bedroom tax and prioritise frontline services in local government. To make work pay and help people out of welfare dependency we would scrap income tax on the minimum wage.
3. What personally sets you apart from the other candidates?
I am the only candidate to have offered open public meetings, in Stanway, Tiptree and Witham in which I have explained UKIP policy and answered any questions. To make this widely available my team and I have walked almost every street in the constituency delivering 35,000 invitation flyers in person.
4. Name a pledge you will fulfil, if elected, within 100 days.
A vote for UKIP is a vote to leave the EU so a UKIP majority government invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to restore Britain’s independence and self government.. We could then reactivate Britain’s seat at the World Trade Organisation trading freely with Europe the Commonwealth and the world.
5. What do you think is the biggest challenge Witham will face over the next five years (house building aside)?
For as long as net migration continues unchecked at 300,000 per year Witham will face increasing pressure on jobs, housing, roads, infrastructure and on services such as schools and health care. Only UKIP are committed to leave the EU, and introduce an Australian style, points based system for all immigration.
6. Is there a policy or piece of legislation YOU would personally propose if elected which is not in your party’s manifesto?
Parliament increasingly legislates on levels of individual liberty. My bill would restore individual freedom as defined by the Act of Settlement 1701 “Government cannot grant freedom to the people because freedom belongs to the people by birthright. Government exists not to give the people liberty, but to protect their liberty.”
