We asked Braintree's Lib Dem hopeful Matthew Klesel six questions, but only gave him 50 words to answer.
These are the results:
1. What do think about the current Government-set house building targets in Braintree? If you don’t agree with them, how will you fight them?
Our area needs to accept a fair share of development, which if planned considerately will help to maintain our prosperity. Decisions must be taken locally, with input from local communities. I would fight for the best deal for Braintree and ensure developers improve local infrastructure and services.
2. Apart from the NHS, what should be the government’s number one spending priority?
Spending should be focussed on essential services, not unnecessary government intervention. The Government should concentrate on things the private sector cannot or will not do - this includes improving our transport infrastructure such as the A120 and increasing capacity on trains to Braintree allowing our area to thrive.
3. What personally sets you apart from the other candidates?
I’m passionate about making a difference. I believe we can create a fairer society where everyone can succeed. I want equal opportunity for everyone regardless of gender, sexuality, race or background. I have worked in the NHS, private sector and parliament and will use these experiences to promote fairer policies.
4. Name a pledge you will fulfil, if elected, within 100 days.
I pledge to honestly and fully represent the people of Braintree. I will be open, approachable and visible to people and ensure their voices are heard in Westminster. I will seek to restore confidence and trust in politicians, the loss of which has been damaging to our country.
5. What do you think is the biggest challenge Braintree will face over the next five years (house building aside)?
Apart from securing promotion to the Football league? Transport and infrastructure will have to improve if the area is to succeed. Better road and rail links will help both individuals and local businesses prosper, creating more jobs and opportunities for people.
6. Is there a policy or piece of legislation YOU would personally propose if elected which is not in your party’s manifesto?
The housing problem is one of my main concerns and I’m glad to see the Liberal Democrats are taking it seriously. I would go even further in encouraging housing to be seen as somewhere to live and enjoy rather than a commercial investment.
