PUPILS were whisked off to the magical world of Narnia at the annual Get Witham Reading Event.
Children from Powers Hall Academy and Templars Primary School took part in the themed day based around C.S. Lewis’ iconic children’s book The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The book was set during the events of World War Two and children were encouraged to dress up as evacuees like the characters from the book.
The school decorated their main hall with old Christmas trees and snow, there was a train set up in a classroom and the children took part in cookery lessons with their parents.
The Get Witham Reading event began five years ago after a meeting between head teacher Jane Bass and Witham MP Priti Patel.
Mrs Bass, said: “It is a very important event now, it is probably the most significant day of the year - the children love it.
“The difference in children’s mentality about reading is huge, and in both schools I have seen a difference.
“Reading is very much part of our school culture."
Priti Patel said: “I am excited to launch the next phase of Get Witham Reading and to join pupils in enjoyable reading activities.
"Reading for pleasure is extremely important for learning and early development as it helps foster greater imaginations while improving core academic skills.
"I commend Mrs Jane Bass, and the leadership of the schools, for helping to organise this event as well as the teaching staff at Templars and Powers Hall Academy for educating young people about the benefits of reading.”
