SCORES of A-level students across the district have passed their exams with flying colours and secured places at top universities.

The proportion of A-level entries awarded an A grade or above has risen to an all-time high after exams were scrapped for a second year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Students have been given grades determined by teachers, rather than exams, with pupils assessed on what they were taught during the pandemic.

The hard work by students from Witham Sixth Form clearly pair off, with many of them receiving stellar results.

Year 13 students at Witham Sixth Form achieved a crop of results to be proud of, with 93 per cent of students achieving A* to C grades in English; 80 per cent of students studying triple sport securing triple Distinction* grades; and 46 per cent of students bagging top grades of A* to B across their A-level subjects.

Luen Bala will attend the University of East Anglia next month to study Economics after a clean sweep of A grades in Economics, Business and Finance.

After suffering from Glandular Fever for most of his final year of study, Devon Amos went on to achieve triple Distinction* in Sport Science.

Charlotte Clemence will be swapping Witham Sixth Form for the Royal Holloway University after securing some of the highest grades possible in Business. Economics, Finance and English Literature.

Damian Lee, executive headteacher, said: “In a year like no other, today’s results show how the students of Witham Sixth Form have responded like no other.

"Rising to the challenges of remote learning, overcoming the difficulties of disrupted teaching and embracing the potential pitfalls of final assessments, our sixth formers worked with a fortitude and commitment that was, at times, humbling to observe.

"Each and every one of them should be proud of what they have achieved and owe a debt of thanks to the staff who have supported them every step of the way.

“As we begin to leave the past 20 months behind us, Witham Sixth Form students can move forward with a sense of accomplishment knowing they have not only the grades, but the resilience and resolve to move on, confident that they have what it takes to succeed."

Head of sixth form, Julie Lizzimore added: "“Our students adapted incredibly well under such different circumstances and in a world of virtual learning and revolving around a pandemic.

"They have never failed to impress us with their resilience, determination and continued focus and commitment within their subjects.

"I hope their next steps are in much calmer waters and wish them every success on their journeys, as these results will enable student to access their next pathway whether that be university, employment or apprenticeships, which is our core aim.”
