CONCERNED residents are objecting to plans which they claim will destroy numerous protected trees.
Developers are hoping to build two new homes on Blackwater Way, on land behind homes in Julien Court Road, Braintree.
The proposed homes would be semi-detached and have three bedrooms.
The site is currently gardens, with sheds and garages, as well as four trees.
However, the application has sparked protests from residents, with more than 30 objections submitted to Braintree Council.
Much of the anger is over two trees, which residents claim are more than 50 years old.
They fear the trees will need to be removed for building access.
It is possible further trees would need to be removed due to roots causing issues with foundations, according to objectors.
The plans say two will have to be axed.
The application says the “low quality” trees could be replicated on the frontage with trees that are more suitable and to offer better amenity and habitat value for wildlife.
However, objectors say the trees are currently subject to a tree preservation order and should not be cut down.
One objector said: “With all of the new-builds we have in progress in and around the Braintree area, can we really say two new houses, squeezed in here, is necessary?
“As a resident of Blackwater Way, it’s obvious while construction is ongoing this will make the road and path a dangerous place to manoeuvre.
“Cars having to traverse to the wrong side of the road on a bend is a recipe for disaster.
“With regard to the trees, the purpose of having a tree preservation order is to stop things like this happening.
“If this goes ahead, what’s the point in having it at all? Might as well chop down any tree you like.”
Braintree Council is due to rule on the application at a later date.
