A SUPERMARKET has made a dramatic u-turn on a new parking format after facing a backlash from the community.
A new parking system introduced at Braintree’s Sainsbury’s had banned drivers from using its car park when it shuts at night.
Drivers were able to use Sainsbury's car park after the supermarket closed in the evenings until signs went up warning motorists not to park there from ten minutes after the store shuts.
The new parking caused widespread backlash and concerns amongst the community, with steward of the Constitutional Club in the nearby Great Square Paul Johnson worried about the ban affecting trade.
However, Braintree Council has confirmed following talks with the supermarket chain, it has been agreed to scrap the new system.
The council had previously said it was speaking to Sainsbury’s and has now provided an update.
Braintree assets, housing and skills boss Kevin Bowers said: “As soon as we became aware of the changes made to the free car parking after 6pm at the Sainsbury’s store in Braintree town centre, we immediately contacted Sainsbury’s.
“Discussions have been ongoing throughout the week and we are delighted to have secured a u-turn.
“Sainsbury’s has confirmed it will revert to its unrestricted and free parking after 6pm and will instruct its parking operator to amend the system and signage accordingly.
“We understand that the original decision was taken with the best of intentions but we are glad we have been able to help bring this to a speedy conclusion.”
