AN Essex cider mill is raising a glass after one of its products won plaudits in the International Cider Challenge.
The Big Bear Cider Mill, which is based in Stisted just outside Braintree, saw its cider, Essex Gold Rush, take silver at the annual ICC tasting competition.
The event, which is now in its 13th year, is seen as one of the most prestigious competitions for the drink.
The Essex Gold Rush was entered in the acid led cider category, specifically for ciders which, according to the ICC, have freshness and citric or tropical fruitiness.
Expected characteristics of acid led ciders include a crisp or sharp flavour which is light and vibrant on the palette, and an aroma which is perfurmed and floral.
The founder of the Big Bear Cider Mill, Mark Hughes, explained he wanted the cider’s success to be linked to its Essex roots.
He said: “It’s wonderful to have been awarded a silver medal at the ICC.
“This medal demonstrates that award-winning cider can be made here in Essex.
“We are proud of our Essex roots and want to promote products made in Essex more widely; Essex has become a county famous for its drinks industry and this award builds on that.”
