A NEW club is opening at the Witham Leisure Centre to help older people make friends and connections in the community.
Charity Sporting Memories operates free community-based clubs across Great Britain.
The club welcome older people who have a passion for sport and want to make friends and connections in their community.
Now the charity is opening a new club at Witham Leisure Centre, in Spinks Lane.
The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged 50 and older to live better lives.
This inlcudes those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.
The club provides a great opportunity for people from all backgrounds to share their stories, take part in a weekly session which ignites old memories through photographs and quizzes, and get active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises.
There is also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee at half-time.
The club is now looking for members to come along and enjoy the weekly session as well as people who have the time and interest to volunteer to help run or support the clubs.
Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories, said: “Sporting Memories clubs provide a fun set of social and physical activities which allow older sports fans, including those who are more physically or cognitively frail, and all those connected with them, from family members and carers, to have a great time whilst creating relationships and companionship with people with similar interests in their community.
“We’d really encourage people from the local community to get involved with the club, either as members or volunteers, as they provide a unique opportunity for people to get together and to bond over great sporting moments of the past or present and to take part in some fun, fully inclusive games.”
The new club will meet every Friday between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Witham Leisure Centre.
