AN ever-growing independent coffeehouse chain has triumphed at a set of prestigious awards dubbed the ”Grammys of entrepreneurship”.
Toast, which was born in Braintree but has chains in Colchester, Witham and more, has been awarded Retail Entrepreneur of the Year for the East of England at The Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards.
Recognised annually as one of the most prestigious accolades in the entrepreneurial world.
With the awards receiving more than 5,000 applications this year alone, making the shortlist is an achievement in its own right given the calibre of competition.
Previous winner James Watt, founder of BrewDog, said that winning was "better than winning the World Cup."
Popular Dragons Den star and famous entrepreneur Steven Bartlett also dubbed the awards as "The Grammys of Entrepreneurship," highlighting the glamour and prestige associated with the event.
The judges said Toast “impressively combines strong values with significant growth potential, boasting a solid foundation for business success”.
They added: “Their commendable commercial and marketing achievements, coupled with their commitment to environmentally responsible decisions established Toast as a sustainable business for both the community and the planet”.
Toast co-founder Rob Ely was delighted with the win.
He said: "We're still in shock to be honest.
"It was such a surprise to win the award, especially when we were up against so many other brilliant British businesses including many household names.
"It's such a privilege to be recognised for our strong values and sustainable choices, and choosing to do it our way.
"It's also well done to the team too, as a whole, as without them none of this would be possible. It's a team effort."
Francesca James, founder of awards, added: “I am thrilled to witness the extraordinary achievements of this year's winners.
“Their success stories are a testament to the dynamic and innovative spirit that thrives within UK entrepreneurship.
“These inspiring entrepreneurs embody the creativity, determination, and passion that are at the heart of our nation's business success.
“Their accomplishments not only celebrate their own journeys but also light the way for future generations of innovators and business leaders”.
