A VILLAGE pub boss has made the “difficult decision” to shut its doors permanently after saying the business is “totally unviable”.
The Onley, formerly the Onley Arms, in Stisted, announced it is shutting on social media.
The statement, posted by owner Graham Kent, came after the business proved to be unviable after eight years of investment.
Mr Kent bought the business in The Street in July 2013, when it was the Onley Arms, saying it was “to try to prevent it from becoming another casualty of a brewery pub closure”.
“I did this with the intention of providing Stisted with a venue the community would be proud of,” he said.
“One the village welcomed and supported, this would offer local employment and fresh local produce.
“With considerable investment, the renovation and reconfiguration of the public house turned out to be amazing.”
But Mr Kent said since its reopening in June 2016, despite exploring “numerous avenues to develop the business and increase revenue stream”, the business has been through “very challenging times which still show no signs of abating”.
The statement said: “The reality is after nearly eight years of a huge financial investment by my company in this facility, the business unfortunately has proven to be totally unviable.
“We are now aware new plans have been approved for the golf club to provide a greater social space area, expanding their food and beverage offering.
“I have now therefore regrettably come to a very difficult decision to close The Onley facility at 5pm on Sunday, February 18.
“We will continue with the provision of the accommodation at the site.
“Whilst I appreciate that this will come as very disappointing news to many of you, I would personally like to offer my sincere gratitude for your custom, loyalty and support to The Onley.
“I would especially like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all of the wonderful staff that have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic service and great experience to our customers over many years.”
