THE Home Secretary has made a return visit to a STEM Innovation Centre that he opened in 2017.
James Cleverly revisited the centre at Colchester Institute’s Braintree campus.
Mr Cleverly, who is also Braintree’s MP, returned to see the college’s progress in promoting and delivering programmes of further education including apprenticeship programmes.
His visit during National Apprenticeship Week coincided with the college hosting an apprenticeship awareness event for 1,500 year 10 pupils.
This event was made possible through a collaborative effort between Braintree Council, Colchester Institute and schools, led by Claire Pipe, careers lead from Alec Hunter Academy.
She said: “This event brings businesses, apprenticeship providers and students together so that employer need and student aspirations can be aligned."
Areas of high demand include digital skills, manufacturing, engineering and construction.
This includes the new skills required for modern methods of construction, and a ‘green’ future.
Through interactive sessions and guided tours, pupils had the opportunity to explore various vocational pathways and gain insights into how apprenticeships can shape their future careers.
Alison Andreas, principal and chief executive of Colchester Institute, said: “Apprenticeships offer a fantastic route into the world of work, providing a blend of practical experience and academic learning whilst working and earning a wage.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore their options and consider apprenticeships as a viable pathway to their future success."
Mr Cleverly spoke to employers and met with a group of apprentices.
He said: “I hope you will act as ambassadors for the apprenticeship programme so that more young people and adults can benefit from the great opportunities this learning has given to you.
“We need more people – and employers – willing to engage with apprenticeships to provide the skills this district needs”.
Colchester Institute continues to play a pivotal role in preparing the next generation of skilled workforce by working in partnership with local organisations and employers.
