ESSEX Highways is proposing to change the speed restrictions for five roads in Braintree.
A traffic regulation order has revealed that it is planning to implement a 20mph speed restriction in Broomfield Way, Osier Place, Alan-Williams View, Home Field Drive, and Badger Mount.
The restrictions, which are currently in consultation, would be put in place for the entire length of the roads.
The Broomfield Way restriction will start 10m north of its junction with Rayne Road.
The traffic regulation order said: “The county council is proposing to implement and to introduce a 20mph zone order to reduce vehicular speeds and improve the pedestrian environment.
“It is Essex County Council’s policy that new housing estate roads are constructed to ensure, as far as possible, that vehicle speeds are 20mph or below.”
The speed restriction is proposed to reinforce the estate’s physical features such as speed cushions, tight road bends, and a road hump-like feature called a ‘raised table’.
Last December, Essex County Council was hoping to impose a blanket restriction of 20mph across all residential streets in the county as a call was raised at council meeting.
This was moved by Colchester Councillor Dave Harris and seconded by Councillor Lee Scordis, but the motion failed by a majority decision.
The consultation for the proposed traffic regulation order ends on March 22.
