LEADERS at a 19th Century church say they are thankful for the support from two Braintree organisations as a fundraiser to help fix its leaking roof looms.

Members of the congregation at St Peter’s Church, Bocking, are hosting a summer grand draw to pay for repairs on Sunday.

The roof is leaking above the church organ and repairs are urgently needed.

A grand draw will be held at a mini fete at St Peter’s on June 16 following the 10am service.

Raffle tickets are 50p. Prizes include £75 in cash.

There will also be concert tickets up for grabs courtesy of the Institute, in Bocking End.

Church warden Richard Whitbread said: “Fundraising is required urgently to stop the ingress of water into the organ chamber and damage recent work which has been carried out on the organ.

“The estimate for repairs will be in excess of £10,000.

“We are very grateful for the generous gesture and support from Braintree Institute.”

Institute spokesman Lewis Codling said: “As a local independent business, our theatre is more than happy to contribute these tickets to St Peter’s Church raffle.

"As a Grade II listed venue also built in the 19th Century, we understand how much of a struggle it is to maintain a building steeped in history.

“We hope the raffle is a huge success and look forward to seeing members of the church – and the rest of Braintree – at our upcoming shows in the near future.”

Braintree Council chairman Lyn Walters urged the public to help with the fundraising if possible.

She said: “St Peter’s church is important to Braintree.

“The people who attend the church come from all over the district and everyone is welcome.

“The issue with roof could cause major damage if not repaired imminently, so please help if you can.”

Donations can be made at the church or on the day of the event.
