A CIRCUS has come to Witham recreation ground for the weekend.

Circus Cortex has put up its big top tent on Spa Road, opposite Asda, where it will stay until Monday night.

It’s touring its new show ‘Golden Age,’ which explores forms of entertainment from the 1920s and features dazzling costumes.

Paul Archer, Director, said: “Unlike a lot of circuses, this is a fully choreographed show from start to finish, so you will see dance and modern music and a theme running through the performance.

“We don’t have a ringmaster, and there’s something more exciting about running the show that way because there’s a flow all the way through and there’s never a dull moment for the audience.”

Paul and his wife Irina started Circus Cortex together four years ago, which kicked off in Mildenhall in Suffolk in 2021.

Their daughter Ksenia, 20, performs in the circus and started her wire walking journey at just seven years old.

‘Golden Age’ features many traditional circus delights, including high wire, slack wire, perch pole, and juggling, but maintains a “modern take on circus.”

Paul said: “This circus is suitable for everybody. The expectation in the UK is that circus is a place where you take the kids, and that’s not true here.

“We’re very committed and we’re very passionate about giving the public what they pay for—a performance.

"We strive to give them a performance suitable for everybody.”

The circus has been touring this show since March, and it will conclude in October.

It spent last weekend in Maldon, where it was “very well received,” and will go on to Canvey Island and Harlow, with six more stops to come.

Paul added: “We’re in a much smaller, intimate atmosphere and visiting places that don’t get the opportunity to see big shows, because circus is culture.”

There are shows twice a day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, until the final show on Monday September 2 at 5pm.

Tickets are priced from £11 to £30 depending on the seat, with special offers and VIP deals available online.

The performance does contain strobe lighting, smoke effects, loud noises, and the possibility of getting splashed.
