IN just four years, Circus Cortex has quickly become an annual delight in towns and cities across Essex, and after my first visit to the big top tent it was easy to see why.
The ‘Golden Age’ show was true to its name, bringing the glitz, glamour, and sophistication of the 1920s era to life under the bright lights of a circus with a modern twist.
Fully choreographed from start to finish, the show started smoothly with a comedic sketch which called for audience participation straight away.
A comedic duo reminiscent of traditional circus clowns, from their spectacular comedic physical timing to the bulbous shoes, ensured every member of the audience was entertained from the moment the circus’ logo twinkled to life.
Jokes escalated naturally, so that within each sketch was a subtle payoff which was perfect for adults too, with several opportunities for the performers to play with the audience.
And simply jaw-dropping was the sheer daring, skill, and enthusiasm of every act.
After the initial classic high wire, we were treated to slack wire, perch pole, acrobatics and dancing, balancing acts, hoop arts, and more than one act where performers dangled from the top of the tent from just one foot.
Modern and jazzy music continued the flow of the show, with drum rolls and crashing symbols punctuating jokes with perfecting timing, and a steady, subtle build in tension throughout each acrobatic display so that every act ended on a crescendo of talent and fiercely honed skill.
The transition between set changes was sublime, with other characters drawing the eye for more comedy and audience participation while swift hands rearranged the set, so that there was never a dull moment.
Great care and creativity went into every costume, so every facet of the show sparkled nearly as much as the performers as they interacted with delighted children and adults alike.
‘Golden Age’ is a show which is charming audiences everywhere. It delivers the thrilling acrobatic feats as well as comedic theatre, with every act honed to perfection.
Those who do attend can expect two hours of laughter, surprises, delight, and a celebration of culture.
Circus Cortex is in Witham until its last show at 5pm next Monday, September 2.
