TWO firefighter crews have saved an adorable canine from a house fire in Braintree whilst using pet friendly oxygen mask.

Firefighters Braintree and Halstead rushed to reports of a blaze in Stanstrete Field, Great Notley, Braintree, at 6.36pm yesterday after neighbours had spotted smoke alarms going off.

Upon arriving to the scene, the two crews discovered a kitchen fire and could see smoke through the kitchen window.

They then found Waffle, a coackpoo, trapped in the home.

The team worked together to rescue Waffle and used the SmokeyPaws pet oxygen mask as the dog was suffering with smoke inhalation.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Watch Manager Matthew Nash said: “We’d like to thank the neighbours who heard the smoke alarm sounding and rang us immediately. This allowed our crews to get there quickly, extinguish the fire and rescue Waffle.

“Once we got Waffle outside we could see it was subdued and suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

“We quickly applied the specialist pet oxygen masks that we carry on our fire engines to give Waffle oxygen. After a few minutes you could tell there was a significant improvement.

After extinguishing the fire, it has now been confirmed that the blaze started when the hob was accidentally switched on and caused items on top of it to “set alight”.

Essex County Fire and Rescue is advising the public not to leave items on top of the hob.

The service has reported that its crews have attended “so many incidents” where people have used the hob as a storage space and items have set alight.
