THE choice from bosses to shut down the final two banks in Witham has been dubbed a "terrible decision" by the local MP.
Both Halifax and Lloyds bank branches in the town are due to close this month, due to a 'falling' number of visitors.
Following the decision, Witham MP Dame Priti Patel has written to Lloyds Banking Group, which owns both sites, to express her concerns.
Dame Priti said: “The closure of both the Halifax and Lloyds bank branches in Witham will be felt by businesses and residents in the town and surrounding villages.
“While recognising footfall has been driven downwards by Lloyds Banking Group and by all banks to force customers towards electronic banking and online services, many people and businesses still need and rely upon face-to-face services in branch.
“I think this is a terrible decision which needs rethinking.”
She continued: “Witham is a growing town with more people and businesses choosing to establish their lives in this part of Essex.
“We need reliable banking facilities, and this decision is an illustration of a big bank which was supported and bailed out by the state, now abandoning a community which has backed and supported them.”
Witham mayor Lucy Barlow also expressed disappointment at the decision.
She said: “This will leave us with fewer cash machines and some of the smaller independent shops with nowhere to deposit their cash.
“While we understand that the current that lends itself to internet banking, we believe that there must be a middle ground that provides for all.
“We currently work with Barclays Bank, providing them with space to serve residents and would be pleased to open conversations with all other providers to become a banking hub for the community.”
A spokesman for Lloyds Bank said: “As many customers now choose to bank through their mobile app or online, visits to our Witham branch have fallen over recent years.
“The local Post Office offers everyday banking, with cash also available at close by free-to-use ATMs.
“Customers can also manage their money through our mobile banking apps, online, by calling us or speaking to a Community Banker.”
Both branches will close on October 14.
