THE mother of a teenage girl involved in a "hit and run" outside a school has said her daughter has been left “traumatised” after the incident.
Erin Corcoran, 13, had been walking to Maltings Academy in Witham when she was hit by a car as she used a pedestrian crossing in Spinks Lane.
The youngster was later taken to hospital where it was discovered she had a torn ligament under her kneecap.
She will now be on crutches for the foreseeable future.
Mum Lyndsey Corcoran, 40, is reaching out for witnesses after the incident at about 8.10am on Friday, September 27.
Lyndsey said: “Erin has been to hospital and is on crutches at the moment, because it seems she’s torn a ligament under her kneecap where her knee was knocked.
“Her friend wasn’t touched by the car, but my daughter was knocked into.
“She went and hid in the toilets for an hour after it happened as she was so overwhelmed and embarrassed, and she’s now more traumatised than anything.”
Lyndsey added: “She is just sore and limping—but it could’ve been a very different story.”
Lyndsey has spoken with Essex Police and Maltings Academy about the incident and is waiting for CCTV footage from a nearby resident.
She said: “There were other student witnesses who said the car came to quite an abrupt halt, and the other girl on the crossing said she thought it was going to smash into them really hard."
Lyndsey continued: “My aim is to make a bit more awareness, and I want them to be accountable for what they did.
“I don’t know why you wouldn’t check to see if a child you hit is ok—we need to teach our children that’s not the right thing to do.”
Ms Abbott-Jones, Principal of Maltings Academy, said: “Two of our students were involved an accident just outside of school when using the zebra crossing.
"Both came back into school for medical treatment which they received straight away.
"Obviously it is concerning that the driver of the car did not stop and we would encourage anyone with information to share this with the police.”
