A LOCAL Bowls Club is set to see a revitalised bowling green over the winter thanks to £2,500 from local councillors.

Mill Lane Bowls Club in Witham will see a new green to help rectify a problem with the current green being too sandy, which creates problems with dry patches and dry soil after rain.

The works, which will be completed while the Club is closed throughout the winter, will include hollowing out the green and applying humus to correct soil levels and to improve playing conditions.

Ward members Cllr Ross Playle, Cllr Toby Williams, Cllr Sindu Rajeev, along with support of Cllrs Billy Taylor and Paul Heath, are proving the funding for the works from their respective councillor grant schemes.

Essex County Council’s locality budget and Braintree Council’s councillor community grants give local elected representatives the chance to support groups and good causes in their area.

“Mill Lane Bowls Club is a welcoming community group and we were really honoured to be invited by the club to have a go.

“We hope this funding from the local councillors will ensure that the green is match fitch for many more seasons to come and enjoyed by all club members and residents.”

The works will be completed by the Club’s Greenskeeper, Knut Aabakken, before reopening in mid-April.

The Club will offer trail sessions on Sunday mornings in 2025, with membership for the first year at £10.
