A man has been arrested after an assault in Chelmsford left the victim with serious injuries. 

Essex Police are appealing for witnesses after an incident in High Street shortly before 11.55pm on Friday, October 25. 

Officers were called to reports that a man had been punched before falling back and hitting his head on the pavement. 

The victim suffered a serious head injury and remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition, police said. 

A suspect was located by 12.28am with the help of the city’s CCTV operators. 

An 18-year-old man from Billericay remains in custody for questioning on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. 

Det Sgt Paul Olney said: “We ensured a swift and robust response to this incident and our enquiries are continuing this morning.  

“A man remains in a serious condition in hospital and our priority is establishing exactly what happened in the moments before, during and after this incident. 

“His family are being supported. 

“We believe there may have been a number of people passing or in the area at the time of this assault. We want to hear from you.”
