FIREFIGHTERS are on the scene in Maldon after a section of a roof “collapsed” which reportedly just missed hitting an elderly pedestrian.
Maldon Fire Station said: “Firefighters from Maldon are currently at Embassy Court attending a collapsed structure incident along with colleagues from Chelmsford, Colchester and USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), as well as the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and local police.
“As the structure has not yet been declared safe, please be aware the High Street is currently closed from the Wantz Road junction to Victoria Road.”
Janine Dallison lives behind Embassy Court in Tait Mews street.
She said: “My bedroom window has a view of that building, I was doing my makeup and heard a massive bang like an explosion.
“When I looked out the white debris was flying everywhere and I saw the roof was caved in.
“My husband ran out and checked everyone was okay, which they were, but people said it just missed hitting an elderly lady walking past.
“It was scary to see—I’m just glad no one was seriously injured.”
She continued: “Obviously at the moment it’s still a risk, the firemen are in the roof now trying to stabilise it, I guess.
“I think it must have been the wind, and it’s obviously a very weak roof, which is terrible.”
There are reportedly no injuries.
Emergency services remain on the scene with a police cordon in the High Street.
