HERE is a round up of all the key cases heard at magistrates’ court this week.

The criminals that have come before the courts this week range from petty thieves to people going on rampages and damaging property and attacking people.

This is a summary of the cases and the sentences received by the criminals.

Gez Sayers has been spared jail following his rampage in Hadleigh back in October last year.

The 31-year-old of Prittle Close, Thundersley, started off by attacking the woman by beating her.

He then drove to the McDonald’s restaurant in High Street, Hadleigh, where he angrily attacked the property, causing damage to a perspex window.

Basildon Magistrates’ Court heard that the total amount of damage done to the window was £200 and that Sayers had been violent and reckless when damaging it.

This incident led to the police being called, who pulled Sayers over on Hadleigh High Street as he was driving a Honda Civic.

Following roadside checks, Sayers was found to have no driving licence as he had previously been disqualified.

He also had no insurance for driving the Honda. Sayers was arrested at the scene before being bailed and appeared at magistrates’ court this month.

He admitted all three counts against him.

JPs imposed a community order to run until November 16 next year, which will include 30 days of rehabilitation.

He must also complete 70 hours of unpaid work within a year.

The bench also ordered Sayers to pay £100 compensation to the woman he attacked, and £200 compensation to McDonald’s for the damaged window.

Manuel Gomes has been spared jail after he attacked the woman on July 26 last year.

The 49-year-old, of West Road, Shoebury, appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court where he admitted one charge of assault by beating.

The bench gave him a community order until May 19, 2022 where he must do 100 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation of £75 to the victim.

Christopheer Thynne, 29, of Fraser Close, Shoebury, appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court after he was stopped on April 17 in Southend.

Thynne refused to give a sample of breath for analysis and he was subsequently arrested.

The magistrates’ bench chose to give him 100 hours of unpaid work and ban him from driving for 17 months.

He must also pay £95 in costs.

Coy Britchford, 43, of Little Lullaway, Basildon, appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court where he admitted two counts of assault by beating.

The offences happened on June 13 and 17 against the same woman last year.

The magistrate’ bench chose to give Britchford a community order until May 13 where he must complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £620 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Ross Jee, 25, of Hampton Road, Chelmsford, appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court following his arrest on October 18 last year.

Jee was stopped by police in Great Knightleys, Basildon driving a Toyota.

Police found he had no licence as he was disqualified, and had a quantity of Benzoylecgonine in his blood which was over the legal limit.

Jee was given a community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for a further three years.

Jamie Castle has been told to pay compensation to his three victims after the attacks happened on February 9 this year.

The 18-year-old of York Road, Southend was on Canvey on the day when he harassed the two people by using threatening or abusive language or behaviour towards them.

This caused them to have significant distress that harm would come to them, before physically attacking one of them.

When the police were called, Castle assaulted one of the constables by beating him.

Castle was eventually arrested and appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court where he admitted assault and two counts of harassment.

The magistrates bench chose to impose compensation orders to the three victims.

Castle must pay £100 to the police officer, plus compensation of £50 to the other two people.

Tony Borg has been jailed for two months after he was caught breaking into a store in Basildon to steal the goods.

The 43-year-old of Southwark Path, Basildon broke into the WH Smith store in Town Square, Basildon on April 11, 2020 by smashing the glass windows to get in.

Once thewhere he stole the E-Cigarettes which were worth a total of £256.81.

He was eventually arrested by police and appeared at Basildon Magistrates' Court.

In their sentencing, the magistrates' bench said: "The offence is so serious because he used an implement to smash the glass to gain entry, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

"There's considerable mitigation; gap in offending, PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder] in the pandemic and the age of offence, childcare responsibilities and expressed remorse for what he did."

Borg was also told to pay £500 compensation to WH Smiths.

Mark Gerrard was found with abusive pictures of children, including 34 pictures and 66 videos of category A - the most serious kind.

Gerrard, 55, of Drake Road, Grays, also was found at his home address with 98 pictures in category C and 11 videos.

Basildon Crown Court heard that some of the images and videos contained children as young as three-years-old who were being abused.

Gerrard went on to admit three counts of making indecent images of children and was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court last week. 

Mitigation for Gerrard said he “knows the harm he has caused” to himself and his family, but since the raid by police on his home, has taken courses to prevent future offending.

Gerrard was given an eight-month suspended sentence with 40 hours of rehabilitation along with 80 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £500 in costs.
