While the days may be shorter there’s plenty of amazing English Heritage places basking in their autumnal glory and waiting to be discovered!
As a charity, English Heritage ensures more than 400 of its sites, including palaces, castles, abbeys and Roman forts, provide the opportunity to experience history first-hand in the places it happened, and most of all, are kept in safe hands for future generations.
But where to go this autumn? English Heritage has not only picked some of their most impressive seasonal gardens to visit…it has a membership offer which could provide access to these and many more locations all-year-round!
Audley End, Saffron Walden, Essex.
Witness the seasonal changes at one of the charity’s most beautiful gardens. See ripening apples in the kitchen gardens, stately cedars in the parkland and catch the last of the display of flowers across the estate.
Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, near Morpeth, Northumberland.
An “autumnal paradise” soak up the seasonal changes including Acer trees, vines, Persian ironwood trees and tulip tree. And don’t miss the Katsura tree which has the scent of candy floss!
Home of Charles Darwin, Down House, Downe, Kent.
The highlight is the spectacular autumn colour in the valley across from Great Pucklands’ Meadow, a place Darwin and his family loved.
Osborne, East Cowes, Isle of Wight.
See the leaves of the Sweet Gum turning orangery red near The Swiss Cottage, the small house the royal children played in. It’s a picture-perfect view and one which Queen Victoria would have enjoyed too!
Kenwood, Hampstead, London.
With some 6,000 trees, take a walk around the beautifully landscaped parkland, which is truly offering a rich, autumnal spectacle. Rightly described as a “hidden gem” in the city.
These are just a pick of English Heritage’s places to visit, as a member you could visit these and many more locations all-year-round!
We’ve teamed up with English Heritage to offer 25 per cent off gift and annual memberships. So, if you’re stuck for a gift idea this Christmas, this could bring joy for the recipient all-year-round.
What’s more English Heritage membership allows every member to take up to six children under the age of 18 within the family group into any of the English Heritage properties at no extra charge.
Living, breathing, inspiring: history isn’t just something to read about, it’s something to experience first-hand and an English Heritage membership can certainly grant a journey of discovery!
