Braintree Town boss Alan Devonshire was left ruing his own team’s mistakes as he saw them bow out of the FA Cup at Newport County.
Failing to clear the ball from a dangerous situation came back to haunt them at Rodney Parade as the Welsh hosts scored from a subsequent free-kick for a 1-0 victory in their first round replay.
While Devonshire applauded the quality of Robbie Willmott’s set-piece strike, he was more disappointed with his own players’ shortcomings.
He said: “The free-kick for their goal was a worldy so you have to hold your hands up and say ‘well done’ for that, but it has come from a mistake by us again.
“It was their first shot on target and it was a goal so that’s disappointing.
“It’s disappointing that we take the wrong option.
“Yes, we are a young side and I know we are going to make mistakes, but some of the things we are doing out there aren’t good enough.
“Losing the ball in a bad area like that.
“You have to do the basics well and we didn’t do that so got punished.
“We had chances but there were some that we didn’t make enough of and once again, it’s down to choices that they’re making on the pitch.
“They are giving everything in effort and I’m not going to knock them for that, but it is just down to the choices we are making in vital areas, both defensively and going forward.”
