PHOENIX 0 CLACTON 2
East League division 3SE
The Clacton defence was as cold as their coastline when they hosted a buoyant Phoenix Hockey Club men's team in East League division three south east.
The resurgence of their guests in the last two weeks no doubt had caused a few raised eyebrows for Clacton, who also came down from division two with Witham last season.
But, the writing was on the wall for the visitors against a side that had only leaked 16 goals to Phoenix’s 22 to date.
It was this consistency in the press and work rate, that stifled any creativity from Phoenix in the first half and chances were few and far between.
However, to their credit, Phoenix were tight too and the game was scrappy with each side more concerned with breaking up the play of the other than building chances through possession.
In keeping with the pattern, the game was won by two Clacton set pieces, when two mistakes were pounced on by home forwards.
It was a disappointing end to a fine run, but a reminder that Phoenix still need to achieve a consistency in a competitive league.
